Alaska Survival

My first trip to Alaska was to Mitkof Island. Petersburg is the only town on the island. I took a drive to the furthest point on the island, 30 miles from town IIR. I had arrived by ferry after the gun shop had closed so no guns yet (drove through Canada).

Of course I broke down out there on Banana Point, just my kinda luck. It was about 7pm in July. I dicked with the car for about an hour and gave up. Saw some Orca playing and just sat and watched them for I don't know how long.

Long story short, no one goes out there, I had to hike back to town with no protection. No Brownies on the island but infested with blackies, good thing salmon were running.  By the time I got close enough to town to get a ride the next day, I had so many bug bites my eyes were swelled nearly shut and I was quite ill from the bites.

I was so overwhelmed with watching the wildlife and such (even on the long walk) that I caused myself pain and suffering. Once I decided it was serious, I had a hard time finding decent mud/clay to smear on myself for bug protection since the island is basically just a big peat bog.

It didn't kill me and I learned something so I suppose it was a good thing, but took me 3 days to get over the bites.
